This might be a controversial topic, but let’s be honest, is the saying “the worst enemy of a Mexican is another Mexican” (el peor enemigo de un Mexicano es otro Mexicano) true? In this episode, I discuss if the reason Gorge Lopez doesn’t showcase “realistic” Mexicans in his sitcom has anything to do with skin color. I also explore how many other celebrities have shared the same sentiment.

Good morning, good afternoon or good evening, depending on when you are tuning in. My name is Jonathan Torres Herrera and you are watching or listening to the JTH Show today. I want to talk about why is it that the worst enemy of a Mexican is another Mexican, but first of all, the central, Okay. Make sure that you also catch a Show if you can not say here and watch the whole thing on Spotify, Apple podcasts, Google podcasts, or radio Public.
0 (42s):
And if you don’t mind, it really helps to show if you just take a two seconds to just hit that like button really, really does. Okay. So let’s get on with the show. This one is an interesting one. So I know there’s a lot of other news happening in the world. Quite frankly, just feels like everything is revolving around a damn U S election. And I didn’t want to get deeper into that. I mean, there’s just a lot of speculation and I honestly, enough of that, however, watching some videos that I came across on, on tech talk specifically, the one you guys caught right before the show there, you know, it started, you know, I don’t know, just moving the gears in my head again, you know, sometime back I covered in Spanish a, an episode called an <inaudible> and it’s basically, you know, our Mexicans racist.
0 (1m 32s):
Right. And in that, in that video, I mentioned a couple of details right. Of, of why, you know, also seen other YouTube videos, you know, that, that there might be some truth to that, right? W what is it with us? You know, the, the, the, the, the, the Mexicans is that, for some reason, we were just fascinated by anybody that doesn’t resemble us. Now, in today’s episode, specifically is more along the lines of talking about, you know, are we our own worst enemies right now? That is true, right? That phrase on itself. It’s true. Sometimes you, you, have you ever attended a counseling a more of a year ever seen any of the motivational videos?
0 (2m 16s):
You’ll hear people say that, you know, to kind of get you off your ass and say, Hey, you know, stop putting yourself down and that yada, yada, your, your worst enemy. Now, of course, again, that is true to a certain extent, but in this particular example, I’m more so referring of one Mexican whether another right, or just in general speaking, the Mexican culture population against Mexicans. Now this also, by the way, it can be true for other, other cultures, all within the, what now is called somehow they are grouped us into the Latin X, which by the way, I don’t, I don’t like, that’s my opinion.
0 (2m 58s):
We can get into that later, but, you know, whatever, right. It could be part of, you know, someone tell me from, I don’t know, the Puerto Rican culture dude is the same thing. You know, you are about to say, it’s the same, same with us, you know, or, and again, and any other culture that is uncertain a Latino. Now I can speak as a Mexican, which is why I’m talking about this. And to start, let me say that I’m not the only one that has ever said at this, that is actually a sane, right. A actor Diego Juanita said at once in an interview, you know, a lot of aerosol <inaudible>, you know, had an article sometime back, you know, a saying of the, the actor, he now saying that, you know, also you have Alan Pulido who is a, a football or soccer, excuse me.
0 (3m 49s):
Player also came up, you know, in a, in an article in <inaudible>, you know, where he said, Hey, you know, again, bear in enemigo, then Mexicano ES otro. Mexicano in a, why is that? Well, in this case, you have who, by the way, if you guys don’t recognize them, he has played a show in several notable roles in some, some movies, but also has recently started as a main actor in the series where it leads me yell, which has, it’s kinda weird. Are you going to get into Y a N? Is he in that article? He was saying, because back then there was an actress, which funny enough, I also covered in my, in my video that I was mentioning to you guys are some that are go, you know, an actor is that, you know, it comes from Murray indigenous background or has a very indigenous background.
0 (4m 42s):
And, you know, she looks a call. It not, you know, as traditionally beautiful as a, again in Mexico, you see many, many actress, you know, that they, they look, you know, tall, very slim, very pale, right? Sure. Latina is maybe, but very, very, very pale. Right. And this is actress that he was a presenting in a war. He didn’t write. And she just looked very, very different. And, you know, he was saying mean while he was presenting that, Hey, it’s sad that the worst Enemy, you know, again for Mexican is another Mexican. And the actors here that I want to put up is a year Lisa, about ACO, you know, we’re again, he was there with her and, you know, because he is there with her, he is saying, you know, there a lot of hate towards his lady, you know, and it really came down to the color skin.
0 (5m 35s):
Okay. So the The moving on to Allen, a L a soccer player that was telling you about, he was saying, he said to them, because he, they lost a match. And for those, what are you guys that I may not know this in Mexico, they take a soccer, many people, they take it very, very serious to take it, almost a series of some people take a football American here in the U S right. And, you know, they, they lost, I guess. And, and like, he felt like everybody, you know, went after his neck. So he was like, damn dude, I, instead of like, you know, uplifting us and saying, it’s okay, you know, another game, you know, will have another game the next time. It’s, I, you’re the worst for ball player quit right now.
0 (6m 15s):
And it’s, you know, that’s why he, he stayed at that. Now I’m gonna, I’m going to say this before I came in two and two other examples, let me say this I’m. It is something I came to my head who knows of other scholars have said of this in books, but something that I came to me and I just, I can’t get, I can’t shake it. And that is, you know, in 1821, right. When Mexico one is independence from the Spaniards, right. Spaniards came and for 11 years try to conquer Mexico. Right. They inflicted a lot of, of their culture, right. To begin with their religion.
0 (6m 56s):
And, and again, many other things, but ultimately they lost right. That they Mexicans, a lot of them, they feel very, very happy. They feel very proud of saying, yeah, you know, we kicked her ass as we sent him in their ships, right back. That’s a thing that might of happened, but they actually never really left. Right. The Spaniards came and they definitely conquered and sure. They might have lost ultimately the war in 1821, but they never left. You know? And why do I say that? Well, you know, just doing quick searches, where we have very famous singers and, and just figures they have made it, you can kinda say, do to Mexico and in Mexico for that matter, you know, I just, again, takes a, a, a quick Google search that you can do yourself.
0 (7m 41s):
You know, I came across people that now that I think about it, yeah. A lot of Mexicans just adore love. And again, they’re like, you know, they’re, they’re put up in, in pedestals, right. As these individuals that a put Mexico’s name, you know, and I’ll do it when, you know, and then it, which I don’t understand. Right. And that is people like ready and Dickie glass. Yes. Julio Iglesias, which has the father at a hundred sons, Ricky Martin <inaudible> Domingo. Right. And I, you know, a lot, a lot of people are about to just be like, how dare you say that? Miguel will say, stop it, stop it.
0 (8m 21s):
Oh, you, you went too close. JTH you went too deep. I’m sorry. But it’s true. Right? A lot of these individuals sure. They they’ve, they’ve sang great songs that, you know, what some of them, I think I’m pretty sure I, I sang along to write, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that the ones that we have, right. The ones that sometimes we’re known for, even on Google, they are not even really Mexican right. Shakita. And then another one. So why is that? Well, yeah. That’s why we do have our own right. Famous. And I will say this a somewhat old, right.
0 (9m 7s):
Not any, anybody new, recent. Right. And, and I challenge you to think about someone right now, other than like, we have some <inaudible> <inaudible>, which is a lot of people we’ll be like, eh, I don’t know, dude, she’s from Texas of Mexican barons, are you sure? But according to the Googles, Elena <inaudible>, and then it’s funny. I literally put famous Mexican, you know, sinkers reasonably yell, by the way, if it’s a noose break for you, that was a meal is not a Mexicans that we have to adopt him, I guess. You know, we even gave him El Sol de Mexico. Right. Which again, we, we gave someone that is not even a Mexican, by the way, at least Me yet, according to Wikipedia was born in Puerto Rico.
0 (9m 55s):
What if we were like, ah, liar, blasphemy, JT, I’m sorry. I’m sorry. Oh, that we made them famous. I say we as a Mexicans. Cause I, I mean, I known him for, for being famous in Mexico. I do. And I don’t know him for being famous in Puerto Rico or a former, his parents. We’re in Spain. I know him for being famous in Mexico, but the guy is everything of him is not sure. Maybe bean in Mexico makes him Mexican. I guess if you want to get romantic and if you just want to win this argument with me. Yeah. I guess. Okay. But it goes to show, right. And I it’s it’s it’s it’s sad. You know, we have sure. We have again, to continue to do this real quick.
0 (10m 36s):
Other, other famous individuals, Jose Jose at a hundred Fernandez, bettering Fante <inaudible> <inaudible> but you notice the names of the mentioning, again, all that all through a quick Google search. Okay. That Google themselves based on their algorithm. I don’t know that it will be in any different in and many other countries like to, to the top. The names at rice at the top are at least of genuine. Mexican very much older artists. Right? Very old figure heads may be back then maybe the old generation, which is my point, by the way, I used to use to a really Support and really gather around, are there people, right?
0 (11m 21s):
But you know, it is a lot of these names are not really new upcoming artists. The upcoming artists that I found are people like Maluma. I like the people. Don’t like the tone, which by the way, he’s not, Mexican maybe he sings in Spanish, but he’s not in Mexican he’s, he’s a Colombian. Right. You have a lot of other artists, but what happens? And my point today is I have noticed that it is true is a very true sentiment. Among many others. I’m a, Mexicans like myself, we’re sure might get Support and people might want to, you know, like they say, rub shoulders with you once you made it. Right. And that’s actually what, what I was talking to my wife for a minute ago, my Barbie for we, we start always brainstorm.
0 (12m 5s):
Like, you know what Carmen, when you see yeah. The Support of Mexico is, it’s almost like a checklist and it’s a really shitty checklist. It’s like, okay, well, let’s find out first. How do you happen to have Spanish blood? How about Spaniard? What do you call them? <inaudible> so it, is that a, what’s the word in English? The word, no, I am stuck in Spanish. Really a fraction. So that was the way we call it. Whenever, you know, things that make you look face to face. Thank you. Face of facial features is that, Ooh, you are going to Brown. You’re going to shore. Okay. Now, so that’s a note. A rich. No. Okay.
0 (12m 46s):
Are you famous already by chance? No. Damn. See. I wish I can support you. Right. But yeah, in the eye is of course you always, always the highest. Right. And so are you pretty, you know, so, you know, how can I support you? You just look like another, Mexican it cold. But a lot of the times it’s like that. Right? I have, I haven’t had a lot of conversations with people that say, dude, you know, don’t, don’t expect any, any Mexican to support your business. When I had a business in Mexico, like, you know that if anything, they’ll, they’ll try to steal from you. Doug. Try to tag up at your place, Sue you. I mean, they’ll do the Worst. Yeah. They’ll do the Worst to you. Right. Ah, by wait a minute, if it was like an American company, it’s almost like a pride like, Oh, I work at, I don’t know Social company or I am not going to bash in the American companies right now.
0 (13m 34s):
It doesn’t the point of this, but I, and it’s true. So I would hear people, you know, propped up. That was really, really proud because they are there, we’re working. They apparently landed a job at a, okay, here. I’ll say it just like a Google. You know, I landed at Google and it’s like, you know, but saying I work at Cali. Max is like, can you mix? It’s very sad, right that evening. Okay. With having a, at one point or another someone I got a little slim, right? Who a Mexican who achieved to be at one point or another for a few years, a, the spot of riches Mann in the world. It was still not good enough. Right? Mexico, you can be a powerhouse can be a global power.
0 (14m 16s):
It really can. I really do believe that I don’t want to be romantic. Like I accuse people who have been, I actually believe that. And I, I believe that when you look at the map, right? When you, even when you bunch the Latins to Latinos, Latin X, I’m sorry. I mean, no disrespect. Perfect. Alright. But a lot of people, if you were asked and the Sri, Hey, you know, point out, I don’t know, a point out where they are less Venezuela. Some of them we’ll be like South America or do you know immediately where, you know, a Columbia shirt is kinda big. So it kinda jumps a Peru, you know, side of the Lord. Some people be like, yeah, this is somewhere there.
0 (14m 57s):
I really can’t put it out. But you know what? Most people can’t point out immediately, Mexico. Now, again, this is no disrespect. It’s just because it’s so big. It’s big. It’s not tiny. It’s not a tiny country. A lot of people make it out to be a tiny country and be like, Oh, they’re a bunch up at the Latinos or the Latin next, which is why I hate that. Because it’s a shame that for, for as big as it is in the potential that it has the people in it many, not at all, because you know, there’s always exceptions, right? I’m sure there’s some phenomenal people out there are always giving to the community. Always trying to Support fellow craters that are Latino.
0 (15m 38s):
Mexicans rather, excuse me. Mexicans right. I, I know I’m one of ’em. I do it all the time to the guy, the videos that you saw in the beginning. In fact, let me give them a shot at right now. Right? I’m going to show that I, you know, I put my money where in my mouth is, right. So this individual, which of you guys choose two of you guys want to, I recommend that you do a go follow him. If you have him on tech talk, in fact, you can even go on Apple Podcast and download his album, write his at On. And tech talk is at it. Torres the North. They have Ryan and his album is on as an app. Apple On app on iTunes. I downloaded it, you know, is My it’s a music. Just what I like know, you know, he, he mix in, you know, the, the, he says, you know, Mexican kind of like mariachi, somehow reggaeton.
0 (16m 25s):
It is a new way, whatever, man. That’s cool. That’s what you want to do. Go for it. Right. Again, not saying I’m gonna be blasting something to my ears everyday, but I did it to Support right. I’ve done it. Two other people, like I’ll tell you the Alvarez, right? Who is he is known and the wanna, but you know, from this way over here in Texas, you know, I S I spread hay. There’s a, a guy that, that, you know, does news and My agree with some of his points. You might not, but Hey, here, here’s a, one of his latest shows or something. Right. I, I support him. Same can be said for, with someone like a, a, a, a blue, a guy that is also in use in Antioch Warner. Right. Again, it’s just, it’s just showing that right.
0 (17m 6s):
Support and again, those are the people that I believe might be around in Mexico, but I think the vast majority are not, I think the vast majority, okay. The vast majority of people, unfortunately, for some reason, have this inherited negativity have their own culture of their own race. Right. Here’s an example. What do we do when someone loses weight, Tom, times and times, I’m a book and be like, Oh, great. For them. That’s not often the case. Often the case, it’s like, I give Flaca, meaning you just skinny. And it’s like, if you get ways that guy <inaudible>, you know what I mean?
0 (17m 47s):
If you buy something that’s really nice. I can trying to show off that you bought that for this battery, or you bought this for this, this I. Yeah. They’re going to steal it from you. I hope they steal it from, you know, it is, you know? Yeah. And then you want me to do it? Well, maybe that’s just that your family I’ve heard it. I’ve said it before. In other videos, I’ve heard it from other strangers. I’ve heard it from random Mexicans right. In, in stores, in neighborhoods. It’s just that negativity that we cannot shake off. You know, we don’t want to Support again, unless the person is, looks okay, what are you talking about? Or they have money at a cow.
0 (18m 29s):
Can I benefit? Can I get some, may the us? Or is it, Oh, they’re very famous. Oh no, they’re totally. They are my cousin, bro. And then my cousin, I know that they’re actually not my cousin. They’re like the cousin of a friend, but we grew up together. So we’re like that Emily it’s like that. Right. It’s a very sad. Do you know when, when did you finally go in the class went when you find him to be like, no, I told you I’m totally with them and I’ll tell you about them. It’s when they are already made it. Which by then it’s like, well, we’re the ones are, what is your Support write then? You know, when you are ready, someone you can say, right. I have a lot of the times you see, when you have people argue like, Oh, there’s never anybody you know of, of AR of Latinos or a Mexicans that are anything in politics in the U S I wonder why is cause a white man?
0 (19m 16s):
No, that’s not going to be a white man. Not cause of the black men. If you guys didn’t know this, you have the Latinos run for actually the presidency. Yeah. I mean that cool. Who, who, you can not count Beto O’Rourke because he is, he’s been in a parcel forever Allen and others. Cause I researched him. Oh, you can’t count someone. Like, I don’t know. Like, let’s see here. I got a loss, his name. I brought it up to the day. Huh? He’s a guy that a Trump used to make fun of him. As a matter of if I remember his name, I’ll put his face there. But you know, I gave him props. We recently, because he was the one that grilled the social media dude.
0 (19m 58s):
But anyways. Right. Cause he has like a he’s I think he’s like from Columbia or a Cuban. So people dismiss it. Cause like he’s been here for so long. OK, fine. But here’s my point. You have someone like that. Julian Castro, Julian Castro. Right. Who is actually very, very Mexican and tried to go for the presidency. Right. Do you know how much support he got? Some of these, you guys are listening to the stage and you’re like, I have no idea who that is. Exactly my point. Right? Exactly my point. But you can, we all know who fricking stupid names are like Trump, you can’t get that out of your freaking mind and you’re in your mouth because your letting for the vast majority, the media just shoved me down your throat right now.
0 (20m 43s):
It’s not a, it’s a discussion right now, literally a big discussion between you and the Support one old white dude or another I’m sorry. It’s like that. But where were you? Not even a year ago when <inaudible> was trying to run for something. I know a lot of people weren’t there and unfortunately is very real for a lot of things. Right? The Support is not, is just not, there is more hate, there is more hate to be spread, you know, against someone that maybe looks like me. Right. That looks maybe a little darker than me, but it’s just like, Oh, it’s because, you know, if you just look like Chris Hemsworth just a little bit, you know, I see you tall and strong and to sing,
2 (21m 28s):
But you don’t,
0 (21m 30s):
You don’t, you look like just Lopez which speaking of, thank you for bringing them up. George Gorge George Lopez. So I have a little, I have a little bone to pick with George Lopez. I don’t think he’ll ever see this, but if you are,
2 (21m 48s):
Is that what he does at a time? Okay.
0 (21m 52s):
Gorge listen. I liked George’s comedy. I’m going to put that right right now. Right? I enjoy his TV show. In fact, I’m actually rewatching his, his sitcom. Right. I was bummed out when it was announced that, and that was going to be off air. I was kind of noted at nerded out when he went on tech talk and I came across his, you know, the song that he has, where I don’t know if he owns the rights or something. Cause he uses it for everything. But at the low rider song, right. I don’t, I can not, I don’t know. A few of sympathetic with the whole idea that he comes from like a ghetto background with cholos, even though I did grow up. And when you consider a ghetto, I was never hood that way.
0 (22m 32s):
Right. I was never with the low riders and saying essay in time, my, my top thing and undoing the other ones that are like Eileen late at night. I never did that. I’m sorry. Right. I just, that’s not who I was. So from that stands, you know, we don’t, we don’t have nothing now. And then, Oh my God. He speaks to me. It doesn’t take away from the fact that, Hey, I enjoy some of the, the, the comedy, you know, punches. He has it. He is funny, but here’s the bone that I have with mr. Lopez in his show. I realize maybe he didn’t know where I realized a way back when, right when I was growing up and I was, and I was watching a show is a sit-com. Maybe it wasn’t a, and you know, in front of me like that, it was in the top of mine.
0 (23m 12s):
But now it is. And what is that? Well, mr. Lopez a cast. It is pretty much exactly what I just said. Mexican Support all the time. And that is very the lightest of skin of Mexicans. Right? Well, those that hardly, hardly look like Mexicans. And if you don’t have it, you don’t relieve me. This is his entire cast, starting with my CLA I’m sorry if I chop up your name and she’s actually, she plays in the show, Carmen Lopez right. The, the younger daughter, she is actually Albanian. Right. And everyone else.
0 (23m 53s):
And you see on here again, they have some, a Mexican descent, but if you look at them, they look fairly, fairly white. I’m going to say that right now. Yes, George, he stands out like a sore thumb, like this side. Torres thumb looking color. Yes. Right. But again, it goes with the idea that once one of us like, you know, darker skin, not as attractive makes it, it’s like, okay, bring on, bring on everyone that it looks that way. Maybe has by like a checklist, like qualifications, but you don’t really look Mexican, I’m sorry.
0 (24m 34s):
You hardly look. And that is that. That’s kinda like, again, the bone that I picked with this guy, right. That he’s so like a On a land, this and that. And he is always, you know, I’m trying to make it sound like he’s so good. And you know what that day? And it sounds like that it’s like a comedy stuff. And listen, allegedly, according to two, my wife here, she looked at, you looked at some of his, what he’s done and looked like he’s done, done things for the community again. Great, awesome. That’s that? I’m not arguing that maybe is something, some kind of a tough sub-conscience. In fact, this is his wife by this will George married. I have nothing against a lady. By the way, her name is <inaudible> Lopez now is actually a, I guess they divorced, right?
0 (25m 19s):
The The she appeared to be a Mexican. And you say, really dude, <inaudible> Mexican no, that’s not what I’m saying. All of that I’m saying is usually, you know, its kinda like show me who you are surrounded by DDA Canadice that’s another Mexican sane. Right? They make <inaudible> it’s a lot of that. Right. That’s just, you know, you know, some of the things that are hard sometimes to say out loud to people and there are hard for people to say to him, period. Cause if they make people uncomfortable, right. Especially now a deck we’re supposed to be so, and it’s open and all this accept and to listen, I’m all for that. I’m all for that.
0 (25m 60s):
But it doesn’t mean that we ignore some of the things that are, maybe we are choosing to ignore, write a lot, a lot. A lot of Mexicans saying, how come we’re not the case and how come we’re in at the end and how come we’re not a bigger, I mean, it, it, all it takes is for you to look, Oh, the mirror and ask yourself, you know, how much really do you care? I’m going to, let me ask you that right now, how much you really do, you care to support, you know, the, the every day, you know, looking Mexican the Mexican that people make jokes about, you know, doing lawns and doing your construction. How much, how much do you care to support those? Right. It’s a good facts. Because again, it’s, it’s a very, it’s a very common problem.
0 (26m 43s):
That’s a problem. At least to me is a problem. Right? I believe it’s a problem. And I think it’s something that we can all get over. I think it’s something that at least for those of us are willing to see that there is a problem. Maybe you don’t agree with every little point that I just made, but you know, like, yeah. You know, I guess you could say there’s, there’s some validity to what you’re saying together. I think we can move forward and supporting each other and more right. Showing that showing, not, not just showing it for a, a, a, I don’t know, Cinco de Maya, which has not, by the way, a real Mexican holiday, unless you’re, you know, and in wetlands, stuff like that. But you know, other than those holidays and it just pops to the top of your brain because, or maybe cause you’re seeing it in your social media, I’m always support each other more.
0 (27m 29s):
Even when we don’t look again like The Chris Hemsworth of Mexico, when we just look like you and Me, you know, we liked the malice. So our bellies resembled it and you know, we’re, we, we don’t need a tan baby are born with it. What I’m saying. And it was a tip for today. Guys is just something that I want you to leave you guys with, you know, other than every other craziness that’s happening in the world, you know, some, you know, food for thought to call it. All right. Thanks for watching. And until next time, see ya. Hey, thanks for watching the JTH.
